Summary

[edit]
Description

The Rheintochter was a surface-to-air missile developed by Germany during WW2 and named after the mythical Rheintöchter (Rheinmaidens) in Wagner’s opera series ‘Der Ring des Nibelungen’ (The Ring of the Nibelung). Intended to be fired from a either 25ft inclined steel ramp or a converted 88mm gun-mount, it was powered by a two-stage solid-fuel rocket and could reach 671mph. 82 test firings were made starting in August 1943 but it never went into production or service due to poor altitude performance. This example was part of a large collection of aircraft transferred to the National Air Museum in 1949 by the USAF, although the official to the Smithsonian Institute is listed as being in 1960. It is now part of the National Air and Space Museum and is seen on display in the James S. McDonnell Space Hangar at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center Washington Dulles International Airport, Chantilly, Virginia
