parenchyme aufond du sinus pétiolaire au départ des deux premières nervures latérales, détailqui ne se présente jamais chez les vrais Pinots. Cest que le Pinot blanc signalé par M. Chandon nest autre que le Chardonnayconsidéré à tort jusquici comme la variation blanche du Pinot noir. En réalité,la Champagne na pas dautres Pinots véritables que le noir et le gris. Mais le ACTUALITÉS 645 mot de Chardonnay, usité dans le département de Saône-et-Loire pour désignerle pseudo-Pinot blanc, est encore dun emploi beaucoup moins général que cettequalification impropre. Il semble rappeler lorigine du cépage, la commune deChardonnay, près de Tournus (Saône-et-Loire). Les viticulteurs bourguignonssaccordent aujourdhui à reconnaître que le Chardonnay nest pas un Pinot,mais bien un cépage spécial pour lequel il est nécessaire dadopter un nom par-ticulier, exempt de toute confusion. Ils en connaissent une sous-variété, leChardonnay musqué^ qui na jamais été propagé.

Préoccupé de la multiplication de cette der-nière variété, encore rarissime, il lavait retrouvée quelque temps avant samort, à^Chassagne-Montrachet, en 1895. Depuis, M. Gloriod en a signalé un gise-ment assez important dans la Haute-Saône, au Clos-Cicons, commune de Gra-chaux. MM. Durand et Guicherd ont également étudié le Pinot blanc vrai dansleur ouvrage sur la Culture de la Côte. Des amis de Vosne-Romanée men ontcommuniqué un assez grand nombre de boutures, issues de ceps de Pinot grisdégénéré en Pinot blanc. Cet accident, consécutif de la dégénération du Pinotnoir en Pinot gris ou burot, se reproduit fréquemment dans certains sols de laCôte-dOr. En 1896, jai observé près des Richebourgs à Vosne, sur un même cep 646 ACTUALITÉS de Pinot gris, une branche pourvue de raisins gris et une autre de raisins par-faitement
