DISTINCTIVE FEATURES OF THE NEW BRIDGE. Manhattan Bridge, which will cross the EastRiver at a point a short distance above Brook-lyn Bridge, will complete the extension of Flat-bush Avenue, Brooklyn, joining that highway toCanal Street, Manhattan, at a point near theBowery, and will thus form part of a fine widethoroughfare from the North River to ProspectPark,—and, indeed, to Coney Island,—reallyproviding the first such thoroughfare from theHudson to the ocean. It will have a totallength, including approaches, of 6,500 feet, acentral span 1,470 feet long, and two end spanseach 725 feet long (Brooklyn Bridge is 6.000feet long, with a central span of 1,595 feet ;Williamsburgh Bridge, 7,200 feet long, with acentral span of 1,G00 feet).
