Text Appearing Before Image:
cipation from theAustrian Germans, and theBohemians are steadilygaining ground in theirassertion of their right to use their own language and maintain their ownidentity as a race. Tiiese struggles by other raceshave naturally counted in favor of the AustrianPoles. The Russian Poles, whose capital is atWarsaw, are not so favorably situated as theirbrethren across the Austrian line ; but inasmuchas the Poles, like the Russians, are of Slavonicstock, they seem to live more comfortably underRussian than under German rule, especially sincethe Russians do not antagonize their use of thePolish language. The Prussian Government, onthe other hand, has been extremely relentless inits attempt to Germanize the province of Posen, and the Poles of that province have had the activesympathy and encouragement of their compatriotsacross the Russian and Austrian frontiers. Thepress of eastern Europe has teemed with this en-grossing topic, and the Polish immigrants in thiscountry are following it eagerly.
Text Appearing After Image:
HENRY SIENKIEWICZ, THE POLISH NOVELIST, WHO IS AN ELOQUENT LEADER IN THE ANTI-GERMAN AGITATION. The friction has never been greater^VoseJ^ ^^^^^ during the past few weeks.Several students have been convictedand sentenced to long terms of imprisonment formembership in the Polish National League, onthe ground that this organization is treasonablein its motives. Punishment of an extreme sort, moreover, has been inflicted in one or two Polishvillages on account of the refusal of certainPolish children, by direction of parents or priests,to receive instruction at school in the Germanlanguage. Against the methods of the PrussianGovernment these Polish people of Posen have nowflamed iip with a spirit that reminds one of theconditions that prevailed in Ireland some yearsago, when boycotting and kindred methods wereat their height. Polish women everywhere areleaguing themselves together to boycott all sortsof German products, and are pledging themselves THE AMERICAN MONTHLY REI/IEW OF REI/IEWS.
