The best view,doubtless, is had from the small boats, as thevcan go well inshore; but both have their ad-vantages. The island of Santa Catalina is aboutsi.xty miles in circumference, and it is linedwith a forest of kelp, known to scientists asNereocystis, a huge vine w hose leaves riseand fold and unfold in the water, the abid-ing place of countless animals of all kinds.Many of these animals are peculiar to thi>region; and the accompanying illustrationsarc from photographs taken under Dr. Hold-ers supervision of objects seen through theglass-bottom boat. The kelp itself formsa beautiful picture, its rich olive hue when kcatches the sun looking not unlike a greatband of amber against the vivid turquoise ofthe water. The effects are in the fullestsense kaleidoscopic; and as the boat movesover the shallow water exclamations come 616 THE AMERICAN REVIEIV OF REI^IEIVS.

BLACK AND WHITE SEA FLOWERS AS SEEN THROUGH THE GLASS-BOTTOM BOAT. quick and often as one scene melts away andanother appears, and the entire range ofcolor is exhausted before the trip is over.Here will be seen a giant California star-fish,and near it the large sea-cucumber, lyingon the rocks prone and motionless. Timid,constantly changing color, and hideous to adegree, may be seen through the glass win-dow the Mephistopheles of the sea, theoctopus, searching for crabs or anythingthat it can lay its tentacles upon. Some ofthe fishes actually seem to have become ac-customed to the glass-bottom boat. One ofthese is thus described: In the crevices of the rocks you maj catchbrilliant flashes of livid red. This is the Gari-baldi, a fish resembling the angel fish of Floridato some extent. . . . It is very sociable, andcomes out, eying the boat and doubtless fa-miliar with- the strange double row of facesthat are looking down at it.
