erive entertainment in natural boyishways; how they can emulate the remarkablevirtues of such real boys heroes as the pic-turesque groups of remarkable persons de-veloped by our frontier, whom we call theBuckskin Knights—such men as JonathanChapman (Appleseed Johnny), a follower ofEmanuel Swedenborgs teachings; the dare-devil Simon Kenton, a devout Methodist; thegreatest scout that ever lived, Daniel Boone,of Quaker ancestors, whose whole life wasinfluenced by the precepts of the Friends; thegreat pathfinder, Marquette, a priest of theRoman Catholic Church; Abraham Lincoln,a product of the frontier; George Washington,the foundation of whose remarkable characterwas built in the wilderness among the Buck-skin men. These are real, genuine heroes,whose virtues our boys may safely copy. CAMP ACTIVITIES Other things boys love to do. At all timesthey have over them a Scoutmaster, whosecredentials have been approved and who isreally their physical, mental, and charactertrainer. He watches over them and guidesthem in their play and their various activities,trains them in alertness, self-reliance, andother Scout virtues. His aim is to turn outuseful, self-reliant, alert, honest citizens. The idea of Scoutcraft appeals strongly toour youth. It is not a religious movement,although all religions endorse it, for we takethe middle road and go no farther than theFatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man. It is not a militarymovement, for militarism isconspicuous by its absence;it is not nature study, forthere are hundreds of soci-eties devoted entirely to thatsubject which are unknownto fame; it is not athletic, forthere are thousands of un-known athletic associations;it is not woodcraft. It isall these things and more putin a way that strikes theboys as manly and helpful.In
