Title
Reverse of Anglo-Saxon buckle
Description
English: Incomplete copper-alloy buckle frame of 11th-century date. The buckle is roughly D-shaped but not quite symmetrical, and the frame is wide and rectangular in cross-section. The bar is narrowed. The frame has a rounded knop on the top and bottom sides (part way between the junction of bar and frame, and the centre of the outer edge) and the centre of the outer edge has the remains of three more pointed knops close together, two of which are now missing. There are eight ring-and-dot motifs evenly spaced along the surface of the frame. The object has a brownish-red patina. Similar buckle frames can be seen on the PAS database at BH-82CF20, NMS-DF54C4 and NMS-E11876, and one from a 12th- to late 13th-century context in Norwich has been published (Margeson 1993, no.128).
