[edit]DescriptionRevere Bell, National Museum of Singapore - 20150208-01.jpg |
English: The Revere Bell, which is in the collection of the National Museum of Singapore (accession number PA-0756-A). It was donated by Mrs. Maria Revere Balestier, daughter of Paul Revere and wife of Joseph Balestier (the first US consul in Riau and Singapore), to St Andrew's Cathedral, Singapore, in 1843 on condition that it was used to sound a curfew at 8:00 pm every night. The bell was replaced on 6 February 1889.
Measuring 81 cm in height and about 89 cm in diameter, the Revere Bell was cast by the Revere Copper Company in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. It is the only bell manufactured by the company outside the United States. The inscription of the bell is: "Revere, Boston 1843. Presented to St Andrew's Church, Singapore, by Mrs Maria Revere Balestier of Boston, United States of America". |
