Description

English: On October 29, on the eve of the Day of Remembrance for Victims of Political Repression, hundreds of people gather in Lubyanskaya Square near the Solovetsky Stone. They patiently wait in line for hours, and then one by one they read out the names of the people executed in Moscow during the darkest days of the Soviet Union.

The reading lasts at least 12 hours, and about 1,500 names out of 40,000 executed in Moscow are to be read in front of the headquarters of the Federal Security Service (FSB), the former home of its predecessor, the fearsome KGB secret police.

The event titled "Return of the Names" was organized by the human rights group "Memorial". It has been held annually since 2006, despite the fact that Memorial was declared a “foreign agent” - a label that, ironically, has a strong connotation with Soviet repression.
