Description
English: According to Clerc, this drawing shows death and the grotesque linked to the destiny of man. Napoleon is perched on the back of a monster with a hideous human head, donkey's ears, a revolutionary bonnet, and a collar inscribed Liberty. The forequarters are those of a tiger, the hindquarters those of a donkey. The creature is pulled by the devil, who says "I'm leading him to Hell" and a harlequin who says "I'm the guide." The creature drools blood and excretes medals, Legion of Honor medallions, and military orders. Napoleon proclaims "what a triumph", carrying a flag labeled "Honor and Country." The flag standard is topped by an owl instead of the symbolic eagle. Above the devil and harlequin is a bird with the head of an owl, wings of an eagle, and tailfeathers of a peacock. The bird carries a banner "General Peace." Overhead are dark clouds from which lightning bolts emerge. Underfoot is a row of violets and red pinks (dianthus), emblems of Napoleon during the summer of 1815. At the back of the procession comes Death, carrying a scythe, wearing a wreath of flowers and a Legion of Honor, and carrying a written document that says "I'll follow him to the Mont St. Jean (Waterloo)."
