| Description |
English: Retford station, ECML 1992. View NW, towards Doncaster and the North on the ex-GNR East Coast Main Line, electrified by 1987. The platform (No. 2) for Down trains calling at Retford is on the left. The ex-GCR Sheffield - Lincoln line, used to cross the ECML on the level at right-angles at the south end of the station and there were eastward and westward loops allowing Sheffield - Lincoln passenger trains to call at Retford, but this awkward arrangement lasting 100 years was resolved in 6/65 by the diversion of the GC lines underneath the ECML and the provision of Low Level platforms: the former north-east loop at the upper level was eliminated, but the south-west loop was retained although latterly has seen little use. |
