독립운동가 서장환(徐章煥) 선생 주거지(主居址)

서장환(1890.10.3.-1970.5.28.) 선생은 대구 달성출신으로 1910년 8월 경술국치를 당하여 국권이 침탈되자 항일 비밀결사조직 상의회를 조직하여 독립운동과 의병가족을 도왔고, 만주와 상해지역으로 군자금을 송달하였으며, 기미년 3.1운동 때에는 독립선언서를 인쇄하여 배포하다 일본경찰에게 체포되어 가혹한 고문끝에 병으로 풀려났다.
1920년 상해 임시정부를 도와 군자금 모금에 힘썻고, 1921년 자유신보를 간행하여 일제식민지의 부당성을 전 세계에 알리기에 힘썼다. 그 후 일본경찰의 끊임없는 감시와 구속을 피하여 1933년 계룡산 신도안으로 일가족이 이주한 후 항일 비밀결사 십이일민회를 조직하고, 후학 양성을 위해 동홍의숙을 설립하여 교육에 전력하셨다.
1943년 이 곳 팥거리로 이주하셨으며 끝까지 창씨개명을 거부하신 대학자이자 항일 독립운동가이다. 정부는 고인의 공훈을 기리어 1990년 건국훈장 애국장을 추서하였다.

Seo Jang-whan(1890-1970), who was born in Dalseong, Daegu, set up an anti-Japanese underground organization called Sanguihoe, helping Korean independence movement and sending military fund to Manchuria and Shanghai when Joseon Dynasty lost its sovereignty by the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty on August,1910. He was arrested for printing and handing out the Declaration of Independence on March 1st, 1919, and was finally released due to disease after severe torture in prison.
He focused on helping the provisional goverment of the Republic of Korea located in Shanghai collect military funds in 1920, and struggled to inform the whole world of the unfairness of Japanese colonization by publishing the newspaper Freedom New in 1921. And the constant surveillance and repression by Japanese police made him move to Shindoan in 1933 where he formed the anti-japanese underground organization Sibiilminhoe, and focused on education for next generation after establishing the educational organization Dongheonguisuk. in 1943, he moved to Patgeori and refused to change his name into Japanese one.
In 1990, he was posthumously honored by the goverment of South Korea with the Order of Merit for National Foundation, Patriotic Medal for his distinguished service.
