Instalado no subsolo do jardim do Príncipe Real, o Reservatório da Patriarcal, também denominado por Reservatório da Praça de D. Pedro V, foi projectado em 1856, integrado no projecto de abastecimento de água a Lisboa do Engenheiro francês Louis-Charles Mary. Programado para abastecer a zona baixa da cidade de Lisboa, este reservatório foi construído entre 1860 e 1864. A sua forma octogonal coincide com a do polígono representado pelo gradeamento de ferro em volta do lago que está localizado sobre o depósito, no centro do jardim do Príncipe Real. A cisterna, inicialmente abastecida pelo Aqueduto das Águas Livres e a partir de 1833 pelo sistema Alviela, foi edificada em alvenaria de pedra, sendo composta por dois compartimentos com capacidade total de 884m3 de água. A função principal deste reservatório foi a regulação da pressão entre o Reservatório do Arco (na Rua das Amoreiras) e a canalização da zona baixa da cidade. Os trinta e um pilares de 9,25 metros, com diferentes larguras, suportam os arcos em cantaria, que por sua vez sustentam as abóbadas. Sobre as abóbadas assentou a bacia (lago) munida com o repuxo. Tanto o lago como o repuxo estariam destinados a arejar as águas antes delas entrarem no depósito. A água repuxada entrava no reservatório através de quatro aberturas colocadas no fundo da bacia, munidas com tubos que se prolongavam até à superfície da água e que funcionavam como escoadouros. Partem deste reservatório três galerias subterrâneas: A primeira rompe da parede de Leste (à altura de 3 metros do fundo) e vai encontrar a galeria do Loreto. Era responsável pelo transporte de água do Reservatório do Arco A segunda galeria, localizada por baixo da primeira, seguia até à Rua da Alegria onde terminava A terceira galeria partia da parede do lado ocidental em direcção à Rua de S. Marçal e abastecia a zona poente de Lisboa O Reservatório da Patriarcal foi desactivado no final dos anos 40, do século XX.
