| Description |
English: Rescue drama on The Parade, Royal Leamington Spa. In April 1998 Leamington Spa was hit by flash floods which caused the River Leam to flood the centre of the town and almost cut it in two. A couple of people tried the wade through the flood waters near the Pump Rooms (seen on the right, surrounded by hoardings as it was under renovation at the time). They were overwhelmed by the strong flow of the floodwaters and ended up clinging onto bollards and a waste bin and had to be rescued by the fire brigade. The first attempt failed when the outboard motor of the Fire Brigade's inflatable rescue craft hit a submerged speed ramp on the Parade and threw itself into the floodwaters! For the second attempt the inflatable was allowed to follow the flow of the floodwater on the end of a long rope controlled from slightly higher drier ground. The red inflatable can be seen just to the right of centre of the picture just as the Fire Brigade pulled the sodden waders on board! 36025 was taken from roughly the point at which the rescue craft can be seen. |
