Its brilliant hues have obtained for it in Guineathe name of the Little Peacock or Sun Bittern. It is very wild inits nature. Pressirostres (Compressed Bills). The Birds which belong to the order PresshosU-ce are charac-terised by a middling-sized bill—not, however, devoid of strength—■ 344 REPTILES AND BIRDS. and a back toe which is altogether rudimentary ; indeed, in somespecies entirely wanting. They are mostly vermivorous ; some, how-ever, are granivorous or herbi\orous. In this order a number ofrather dissimilar Birds have been reckoned, some of which belongdecidedly to the Wader tribe, whilst others, by their general habits,are more allied to the GallinacccF.
