The plan was for these advance troops to climbthe hills (see sketch), thus turning the enemys supposed posi-tion to the temples; the main body to pass along the foot ofthe hills to the east and advance directly up the valley; theJapanese to shut off escape to the east and the Germans to thesouth. The Fourteenth Infantry followed in rear of the Sikhs,but when half way up the hill passed them and reached thesummit first. The writer with four rifles proceeded north tothe pass about 1 mile distant to cut off escape of the refu-gees. Our advance up the hill had been observed, but noresistance was made although there was a fine opportunity todo so. Firing by our troops commenced soon after arrival at thesummit and was continued by them and the Sikhs for fifteenminutes, from the precipice overlooking the temples and ad-jacent buildings in the village below, but we neither saw norheard a return fire. One company was sent down the hill to SKETCH OF TEMPLE REGION.

MILITARY OPERATIONS IN CHINA. 511 enter the village and another (Captain Taylors) followed ustoward the pass. We saw some women and children and afew men, with bundles, making their way toward the hills,but no soldiers with guns. Our fire from the hill top was un-controlled. I saw men against the sky line firing offhand atranges of fully 1,000 yards. The fire discipline seemed to me tobe of the poorest kind. Captain Murphys company drove outsome men who had taken refuge in the yards of the temples,and the casualties to the enemy were probably nearly all causedby this company. The result of the mornings work was tendead Chinamen and occupation of the temples; no casualtiesof any kind on our side. However, there was ample evidencethat the place had been used as headquarters by the Boxers.Two machine guns were well placed to sweep the entrance ofthe valley; in addition, about 10,000 cartridges, a quantity ofpowder, and a number of jingals were captured.
