The corps accompanied the Boers into Natal and connectedthe various camps with telegraph and heliograph lines. Theobservation corps on the Swazieland border, under SchalkBurger, was equipped with a field telegraph by the telegraphcorps. About three months after the invasion of Natal, Gen-eral Jouberl availing himself of a clause of the law, transferredthe entire field telegraph service and material to the civiltelegraph service of the South African Republic and directedthat the heliograph service and the supervision of electricalworks remain under Lieutenant Paff. The instrument used resembles ours in its mount-ings on a tripod, but the mirrors were circular and wereworked by a key attachment, an objectionable feature whichis overcome in our service by having a screen with a keyattachment on a separate tripod.
