GENERAL DEDUCTIONS. 41 I arrived at the Mission of San Diego on the 19th of December. This mission is located in along, narrow valley, formed by the streams descending the slope, and is now occupied as amilitary post. There is a fine grove of olive-trees in front of the mission buildings.— (SeePlate XII.) On the 20th of December Lieutenant Parke came in. He reported that he had followed tothe sea the creek which rises in Warners Pass, and found it emptied near the Mission of SanLuis Eey. The creek in many places passed through rocky canons impassable for mules, andLieutenant Parke is of the opinion that it is unfit for railroad purposes. Leaving San LuisKey, he travelled near the coast to San Diego, and here he could gain no information of anyother pass than the Jacum Pass. He therefore made a rapid reconnaissance of this pass, andbecame convinced it was utterly impracticable.
