shafts on the property, all of which have beenabandoned temporarily, at least. Mines numbers 4 and 5 are con-nected with Mine No. 1 by means of underground tunnels. The orefrom these mines is conveyed by an electric haulage system toshaft No. 1, where it is hoisted in a five-ton skip. Mines Nos. 6and 7 are connected underground. Mines Nos. 2, 8, 9 and 10 are separate, not being connected withany of the other mines. They are each equipped with modernhoisting appliances. Mine No. 3, which is on the Derby tract, hasnot been worked since the Federal Lead Company obtained pos-session of the land. It was abandoned on account of a heavy flowof water encountered while sinking. The Murrell, the Irondale andthe Leadington shafts have not been operated by the present com-pany. Two mills, having a combined daily capacity of 3,200 tons, arebeing operated by this company. These mills are equipped withmodern machinery and have, perhaps, the highest degree of effic-iency of any in the district. (88)

Prior to 1894shallow mining was carried on quite extensively at various placeson this property, but it is difficult to make even an approximateestimate of the amount or value of the output. To obtain the ore included in the above estimate, about 55acres of ground were mined. FEDERAL MINE NO. 1. This mine was equipped ready fo
