dingupon the kind of room and in some instances (for example, assembly halls) upon thesize and kind of seats. To this amount should be added a given percent to take careof the engineers time in supervising such cleaning. The amounts allowed for thedifferent rooms should pay for the difference in labor required to clean these roomsand the labor required to clean the same amount of free floor area. In order that theserates be definitely determined, further study should be made of the different factorsentering into the cost of cleaning. Periodic Cleaning. Study of the elements and costs entering into the periodic cleaning of buildingsseems to indicate that the present basis is not entirely satisfactory or equitable. Itwould appear that periodic cleanings, which are now compensated for at the rate of$6.25 per thousand square feet, should be paid for on a basis similar to that prescribedfor daily cleaning. The ratio of the area of the windows and interior glass (including book-cases) to 20

21 the floor area for each of the several kinds of rooms, and also for the entire building,is shown in Exhibit G. These curves indicate that one school may have 30% moreglass area than another one, both having the same floor area. The maximum differencein glass area for any two buildings of the same size, as shown by the curves, wasfound to be between 3,000 and 4,000 square feet. If the cost of window washing isabout equal to the allowance provided in the Philadelphia and Boston schedules for thiswork, a difference of 3,000 and 4,000 square feet would amount to $75.00 or $100.00 inthe annual cost of the work to the engineer, or a maximum of $50.00 variation fromthe average. In view of the impracticability of including all minor factors enteringinto the compensation schedule, it seems unwise to introduce an extra factor entailingsuch a great amount of work as measuring all glass in school buildings, when the pro-bable maximum variation from the average cost is $50.00 per year, and espe
