he coal deposits of the Carboniferous formation. The coal with its shales outcrops along the northern margin of the beltat various points, for more than 15 miles; and many shafts having beensunk to, and through the main seam, which is the upper one, it is ascer-tained to be very persistent in all its characteristics and associated beds. The outcrops may be traced almost continuously to the gulf, 3 mileswest of Egypt. The annexed map of the outcrop at this point is copiedfrom a local survey made in connection with some mining operations car-ried on here during the war. And the section (on the line A—B) isadded from a shaft recently sunk to a depth of 20 feet through the twoupper seams of coal and the intervening stratum of black band. Thedip is 32° south. The section is as follows: Clack slates and shales, 8 feet, (from the surface). Fire clay and ball ore, 4 Coal, 4 Black band, nearly 2 Coal, li Black slates, , at bottom. OUTLINES. 145 On Dan River the coal first shows itself on the surface about 3 mileseast of Germanton, being imperfectly exposed in a ravine. The coal isabont 3 feet thick. Some 6 or 1 miles further east, at Stokesbnrg, thereare outcrops of three scams in succession, the upper about 3 feet thick, with a heavy body of bituminous shales ; the other two were not wellenough exposed for measurement, but they were explored by a very in-telligent gentleman who reports one of them as much thicker than thetop seam. The black shales and slates crop out at various points aboutthe town of Madison ; and near Leaksville a slope was driven some 60feet on the coal eeam which is here 3 feet thick, and with a dip of 34°and considerable quantities were mined during the war. It is classed asa semi-bituminous or dry coal. The outcrops show that the coal is con-tinuous through the whole length of the belt in this State, which is above30 miles. The thickness of tliE Triassic series Dr. Emmons estimates at a
