there had come intothe surrounding country large numbers of wild deer, or caribou, andnative hunters, who had been sent out earty in the winter, had killedand sent in enough meat to keep the crowd going, with the stores theyalready had. Mr. C. D. Brower had given up his stock of provisionsand was managing the people ashore, and hoped to get enough meatfrom the spring hunting to keep actual starvation from setting in. Ifelt relieved to learn things had gone so well thus far, and I couldnow turn back to the deer herd to further its progress. I had decided to send Surgeon Call on to Point Barrow to let thepeople there know of our coming, and on the night of the 21st wasprepared to leave the next morning for Kotzebue Sound and thereawait Lopps coming, when a messenger arrived, bringing a letterfrom him, stating that he had arrived at Anyok, on Cape Kruzen-stern, on the morning of the 18th, after a terrible journey across theice from Cape Espenberg. He had not received my letter at Toatut,

They had crossed where Ithought it would be impossible, and had a hard experience, but thejsaved a distance of 150 miles and probably two weeks in doing it. I■was greatly relieved and overjoyed at this news; our plans were mov-ing on to success, and I can not speak too highly of Lopp and his boysfor the courage, fortitude, and skill they showed in making that awfultrip successfully. They had arrived at Toatut shortly after we leftthere, and determined to risk themselves and the deer by crossing onthe ice rather than take ten days or two weeks to go around by land. After traveling all day and well into the night, they camped about10 miles from the laud on the north side, but during the night thedeer wandered off, and the next morning were found many miles backon the trail they had just come over, making their way to where theyknew Avas feed. The boys rounded them up
