et long, four and a half inches wide, andfive-eighths of an inch thick, and bolted through with inch bolts. The en-gine at the surface, used for pumping at this shaft and for hoisting at bothshafts, is a plain horizontal cylinder, 14 inches in diameter by 26 inchesstroke, supplied with steam by one flue boiler. Hoisting is done with a bucket. The winding apparatus is driven bybelting. As this method of hoisting is in general use in Colorado a some-what detailed description of it here may serve as an example. The contriv-ance is very simple, and, though not well adapted to deep shafts or heavywork, it answers its purpose very well in shallow mines, and gives muchsatisfaction. The general method of arrangement is indicated in Figs. 1 and2, on Plate XXXL The drum, or spool, A, on which the rope is wound, is placed near themine shaft, so that the rope passes from it over a pulley, b, and thence downthe shaft. This spool, about 4 feet in diameter, is fixed on an iron shaft, c, Plate IXXXI.

I GOLD MINING IN COLOEADO. 513 having at one end a pnlley, d^ of somewhat larger diameter, and, at the otherend, a brake-rim, e. Motion is communicated to the pulley d, by means ofa driving pulley, directly beneath it, and an 8-inch belt, g. This belt is slackand imparts no motion to the spool unless the tightener, A, be applied to thebelt, by means of the lever /, which is done by the attendant, standing atthe mouth of the shaft, whenever it is desired to hoist a bucket from themine. On withdrawing the tightener the spool is held firmly, or its reversemotion is controlled, by means of a brake, which is a 4^-inch iron band, en-circling the spool at the rim, e, and applied by the lever i, as indicated inthe drawing. The pulley, by which the belt g, is driven, is on the sameshaft with, and concealed from view by, the pulley ^, to which motion iscommunicated by the belt I, from the pulley wz, which receives its powerdirectly from the engine. The pulley 7n, drives a long shaft, w, extendi
