gfrom 60 to 100 ft. in width. The road-bed is of the most sub-stantial type, the ballast being 14 in. deep, and laid upon abank 16 ft. in width. Oak ties, 6 in. by 8 in. by 8 ft. in sizeare spaced with 24 in. between centers, and upon these are laid80-lb. rails connected by 250,000 cm. protected rail bonds, andin addition the rails are cross-bonded near all the special work. The power is supplied to the system from the power station atAnderson at 15,000 volts over the Eastern division, and at 30,000volts over the Northern division. The power is received atsubstations suitably distributed along the lines, which containtransformers and rotary converters for reducing the pressure to600 volts and converting the power to direct current. Thegeneral plan of the distribution is shown in Fig. 46. THE MUNCIE-ANDERSON-INDIANAPOLIS DIVISION. IndianapoUs hasa population of approximately 200,000, while the other two citieshave a population of about 30,000 each.
