The available fish food exceeds in quantity that usuallyfound in the sea, its abundance being largely due, no doubt, to thefact that there are no fish to consume it. The lake is also exceedinglyrich in minute plants, especially diatoms which constitute the chieffood of the oyster, but from a practical point of view this fact has novalue when we are confronted by the absolutely prohibitive physicalconditions which the present examination disclosed. From 1893 to 1896 the fisheries in the boundary waters betweenCanada and the United States were made the subject of inquiry byan international commission, composed of Dr. William Wakeham, ofOttawa, as the rex:>resentative of Great Britain, and the writer actingon behalf of this country. The interesting region at the western ter-minus of the boundary line, where the fishing industry, though stillcomparatively new, has already attained a marvelous development, wasvisited in the summer of 1895, and several weeks were spent in exam-ining its principal features.
