three large stock-ponds were excavated and graded, the pondsbeing connected with wooden flumes to get a circulation of water fromone to tlie other. Owing to the large amount of sand in the soil, it wasafterwards found necessary to line the bottom of one of the pondswith clay; but the results were not satisfactory. Seven large rearing-ponds, 80 by 20 feet, were graded and the sides lined with 2-inchhemlock plank. The bottoms were covered with clay, and on this wasspread 4 inches of muck. They were arranged in tiers, so that thewater could pass from the upper ones into the lower. Twenty-foursmall rearing-ponds, 7 by 22 feet, were constructed in a similar manner,and twelve existing ponds of the same kind, previously lined withstone, were remodeled and wood lining substituted. Connections werealso made from the lower reservoir for supplying the large and smallrearing-ponds. In order to avoid a recurrence of damage from freshets, Report U. S. F. LXXXIII the wagon-bridge was raised 1.) feet and extended 20 feet, a new stoneabutment being built on tlio west side of tlie branch; the roadway wasraised to the same height and a dry stone wall built along the road toprevent washouts. For the protection of the 14-inch water-supply pipe and ponds a drystone wall was also built along the spring branch. All of the groundsaround the buildings and ponds were graded and terraced, and road-ways were built from the main entrance to all the buildings and ponds.These roadways were graded and bedded with gravel, and surfacegutters of stone were provided. The necessary fences were also erectedalongside the country road from the Fish Commission reservation tothe main highway, and all of the lauds were sown with blue grass andwhite clover.
