e chamber before the breech is fully closed. Closed.—By returning the lever to its place, or automatically by cock-ing the piece. The back of the hammer in the latter case pressesagainst the end of the slot in the tang of the breech-block in which itplays, and so raises the front of the block into place. In opening andclosing the piece the knuckle-joint of the breech-block face allows it torecede from and approach the face of the cartridge, so that it may sup-port the cartridge more nearly at right angles to the axis of the borethan if the block were in one piece and its lower edge lay close to thebarrel when shut. Locked.—By the position of the breech-block, whicli is also kept inplace by the engaging of the hook of the catch-lever with a correspond-ing notch in the tang of the receiver. Fired.—By a center-lock of the usual pattern. Extraction and ejection.—By a bent lever pivoted to the side of thereceiver below the chamber, and struck by the breech-block face in itsdescent.
