rtilise itself for any length of time, it wouldbecome so weak that it would not be able to survive owing to thiscontinual war. It is a well-known fact that stock deteriorateswhere the young are produced from parents of near kinship.Similarly in the human family, intermarriage of near relationship,i.e., when the degree of consanguinity is close, appears to exaggeratein their offspring any diseases, whether nervous or otherwise, underwhich their parents may have been labouring. Let it then be assumed that cross-fertilisation is advantageous, and that in and in breeding does the greatest harm; and of thisI think there is very little doubt. She may caixse the organsof reproduction to reach their maturity at different times, and tothis the term dichogamy is applied. The term protandrous dicho-gamy is applied to those cases in which the stamen is the first tomature, and the term protogynous dichogamy to those cases inwhich the female is the first to reach maturity. Again, we may have the male and female organs of differentlengths. The term dimorphous is applied to those cases wherewe have two different lengths, as in the primrose. In the oneform of the primrose (Fig. 2) the pistil is short and situated aboutthe middle of the corolla tube, while the stamens are long and lie inthe throat of the corolla. In the other form (Fig. 1) the positionsare reversed, the stamens are short and situated in the middle ofthe corolla tube, while the pistil is long and occupies the throat ofthe corolla. The term trimorphous is applied to thosreporttransactio73glas
