[edit]DescriptionReplicated medallion of Constantius I (2) (obverse).png |
English: Constantius I. As Caesar, AD 293-305. Plated electrotype of an AV Medallion (42mm, 23.22 g, 6h). After a Treveri (Trier) mint issue of AD 297. Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Constantius, holding spear, on horseback right, approaching kneeling Britannia with outstretched arms before the city gates of London; below Constantius, galley with four soldiers sailing right; LON below Britannia, PTR in exergue. Cf. RIC VI 34 = Arras 218 = Kent-Hirmer pl. 152, 585 = Toynbee pl. 8, 4 (for original). Good VF, gilt, some scratches on edge, small flan flaw on neck, some casting bubbles as to be expected.
A copy of the famous and unique medallion from the Arras Hoard, showing Constantius entering the city of London after recovering Britannia from Allectus. The current piece is not stamped, but was presumably one of a series of copies of medallions from the Arras Hoard made by the Parisian dealer M. Etienne Bourgey in the 1920s. |
