Description

Replica of Moai or Statue from Rapa Nui

Moai stood on ceremonial platforms or ahu, by the side of trackways and in the quarry at Rano Raraku. Most, but not all, were made from volcanic tuff. Some wore pukao or topknots.

Communities competed with one another to erect the biggest and most impressive moai. This must have become harder and harder as the wood needed for rollers, and the tough fibres for making ropes, became scarce.
