Description

Owned and operated by the Shuttleworth Collection. c/n HAC01. Seen at Old Warden during the 2013 Autumn Airshow. 06-10-2013

The details below are from the Shuttleworth Collection website:-

Alliot Vernon Roe was one of Britain's most famous early pioneers and later set up the famous AVRO company. From 1910 he started designing and building a series of triplane aeroplanes. He decided on the triplane layout, rather than the more conventional monoplane or biplane, as the triplane layout provided the extra lift that he required. Four triplanes were built and provided valuable experience for later aircraft designs. Both the Avro 504 and the Tutor can trace their ancestry back to the Triplane IV. All have high aspect ration wings (meaning that the wings are much longer than they are wide - this helps to produce more lift). The Avro Triplane is a replica built by the Hampshire Aeroplane Club at Eastleigh, Southampton for the film 'Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines'. During the making of this film it was found to be a very impressive flyer and so the Trustees decided that it should be acquired to add to the Collection. During the winter of 2000/1, the Avro Triplane was completely stripped down and restored. During this time the opportunity was taken to reapply the markings that the Triplane wore in 'Those Magnificent Men'.
