Summary

[edit]
Description

This replica is labelled as a Deperdussin Type B, although it would more likely have been referred to as “Military single seater” at the time. Museo do Ar, Sintra, Portugal. 20th September 2022

The following history is a translation from the museum information: - “This aircraft was offered to the Portuguese government by the Lieutenant Colonel of the Brazilian Army Albino Costa, as part of a popular subscription to the newspaper O Século, having disembarked in the port of Lisbon on 28th September 1912. The only example was delivered to the Tancos Airmen Battalion on 16th November 1913. With the creation of the Military Aeronautics Service and, consequently, that of the Military Aeronautical School on 14th May 1914, the Deperdussin moved to its control and made the school's first official flight on July 17, 1916. It participated in the activities of the first EMA military pilot course in a very unique way: with the tip of the wings cut off, it served as a “rolling plane”, being used for training on the ground and known as the ‘Penguin’.

It was withdrawn from service in 1916.”
