Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Renovated yacht stores, Tollesbury The restoration of the four Edwardian yacht stores at Tollesbury was completed in 1985. The work was initiated by the Fellowship Afloat Charitable Trust and provided much-needed employment and training for local adults. The formal unveiling of a plaque (on the furthest of the four buildings in this photo) was undertaken on 24 May 1985 by Bryan Nicholson, then Chairman of the Manpower Services Commission, which provided much of the funding. Further donations were received from charitable trusts, individuals and suppliers of materials.

The yacht stores were built in the early 1900s to house sails and spares for the great J-class yachts which were owned by wealthy Edwardians and skippered around the Mediterranean by men from Tollesbury. The most well known of these yachts, 'Flying'. was entered by Tommy Sopwith in the America's Cup.

The renovation has won a local design and conservation award.
