Italiano: "La figura di Salomè si staglia su un fondo grigio e indistinto, dal quale emerge portando su un piatto la testa recisa del Battista, da consegnare alla madre Erodiade. Il Vangelo (Mt. 14, 1-12) narra, infatti, che Erode Antipa avesse fatto arrestare il santo per l’aperta critica alla sua unione con Erodiade, già moglie del fratello, ma che non avesse avuto il coraggio di farlo uccidere.
Durante un banchetto in suo onore, Salomè si esibì in una sensuale danza che colpì Erode talmente tanto da prometterle di esaudire qualunque suo desiderio; la fanciulla, istigata dalla madre, chiese allora di avere «su un vassoio, la testa di Giovanni il Battista». La versione di Guido Reni si concentra sulla messa in scena del contrasto tra l’episodio narrativo – una fanciulla che porta una testa mozzata su un piatto – e il volto di Salomè, che punta gli occhi sullo spettatore, mantenendo allo stesso tempo una gelida e impersonale distanza, accentuata dalla sapiente tecnica pittorica utilizzata da Reni, che fa emergere dalla tela le sue ricche vesti e il copricapo, attraverso pennellate lunghe e corpose. L’opera è, verosimilmente, quella acquistata dal cardinale Francesco Barberini il 13 dicembre 1639 e che entrò nella collezione Corsini come dono di monsignor Bardi a papa Clemente XII (1730-1740), diventandone subito uno dei dipinti più apprezzati, come testimoniano le numerose copie e le lodi che le sono dedicate nelle guide di Roma tra Settecento e Ottocento."
