Description

The First International Building was the ulimate in 70s boxy skyscraperisms when it opened in 1974. Anchored on the west end of downtown, it was dressed up with lights that highlighted the cross bracing struts hidden behind the glass exterior. The X building, locals called it. Renamed InterFirst Plaza in 1982, it was the tallest in Dallas until 1985, when the taller InterFirst Plaza opened and it was renamed InterFirst Two.

The building was completely redesigned by Prudential Insurance and developer LaSalle Partners in 1985-86 - with the architectural elements designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The new design was kept under wraps and advertisements were printed in newspapers around the country in March of 1986. The ads showed a jigsaw puzzle image of the new design, impatient readers cut up the ad and pasted it together to get a look at the new tower. The $40 million renovation was unveiled on March 20, 1986. The new look gave the building a new name - Renaissance Tower.

My grandfather worked on this building, and somewhere he's got a ton of photos of it under construction. I am sure i'll find them eventually.
