English: In May 2021, a massive iceberg calved from Antarctica’s Ronne Ice Shelf and captured the title of “the largest iceberg on the planet”. In just over two years, that iceberg (named Iceberg A-76) had shattered into more than a dozen pieces and drifted into the relatively warm waters of the South Atlantic Ocean where it is expected to quickly melt.
On August 14, 2023, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of A-76A and other remnants of the original A-76 floating under clouds in the remote water of the South Atlantic Ocean. The remnants are located about 150 miles (241 km) north of South Georgia Island. On May 19, 2021, the European Space Agency reported that the new A-76 iceberg measured about 4,320 square kilometers (1,668 square miles) in size, which is slightly larger than the Spanish island of Majorca. It was estimated at 170 km (106 mi) in length and 25 km (15.5 mi) wide. Within a month, the ‘berg broke into 3 pieces large enough to be named, and A-76A was the largest of those pieces. As of August 11, 2023, the U.S. National Ice Center estimated that A-76A measured 57.5 kilometers (35.7 miles) in length and 5.6 kilometers (3.5 miles) in width, or an area of 322 square kilometers (125 sq mi). That’s less than half the size of the Spanish City of Madrid. |
