hs and belched forth flame andmissiles of death. For an hour or more the chasing shotand shell from both sides passed over us (as if we werenot known to be there) with all their weird noises, hiss-es, and shrieks. About 10:15, our army arose at onceas if by magic out of the ground. Then commenced theordeal. The Regiment on a charge started for the Fort.At once the Confederates opened with grape and canis-ter, plowing gaps through our ranks. Steadily, wepushed on up the slope into the ditch and over the par-apet, placed the flag on the fort, and kept it there forsome time. Thirteen prisoners were taken out of thefort, only a few of our boys got into the fort and theyhad to come out of it, and remained in the ditch outside.By this time the Confederates that fled or w-ere drivenaway returned with re-enforcements, so we now had toprotect ourselves the best we could. That was doneby all kinds of devices. On the open we dug holes forour bodies in the ground, or in the wall of the ditch wath
