FwENTY-SECOND lowA, May 22, 1863 IOWA VOLUNTEER INFANTRY 39 our bayonets, or maybe a friendly stump protected us.As the Regiment moved forward, it was met with a tor-rent of shot and shell and minnie balls. The rebels fora moment stood on the top of their rifle pits, pouringtheir deadly shot into us. Then was our sharpshoot-ers opportunity, and well they made use of it. Manyof the Confederates paid with their lives for their fool-hardiness. The noise of battle was fearfully awful,with shrieking shot, exploding shells, and the groans ofthe wounded and dying. Missiles of all kinds, dustand pow^der-smoke filled the air. This state of thingscontinued for hours, then quieted down. About three oclock reenforcements were sent, and an attempt wasmade to follow up our victory, but it proved useless.By that time the few left of our Regiment had securedpartial safety till darkness would assist us to fall backto the rear.
