y S. C. Jones. PREFACE In the writing of this • book there is no desire toantagonize any written history of the Twenty-secondRegiment of Iowa Volunteer Infantry. We do notstart out to give a complete history of the Regiment, but, having carefully kept a diary of the movements, marchings, battles fought, and skirmishes in which theRegiment was engaged during the three and more yearsthat the Regiment served, and being a personal eye-witness and co-actor in all its battles, sieges, skirmishes, marches, and bivouacs, we aim to follow closely theevery day routine of army life and conditions, enteringinto details where we were personal eye-witness of thesame and adding a brief account of prison life in threeof the worst prisons in the South. We will also give alist of the killed, wounded, and captured in all the bat-tles, sieges, and skirmishes wherever the Regiment par-ticipated, the number of troops in the Vicksburg, Miss.,campaign under General Grant, and Lincolns speechat Gettysburg, Pa.

LllCL-T. S. C. JOXES CHAPTER I More than a year had now passed since the war com-menced. The feeHng had developed that we had a veryserious matter on our hands. Up to this time I doubtif the people had felt that it was so serious a matter.True General Grants successes at Forts Donaldson andHenry was a gleam of light amid the darkest days, yetthere was a shadow of impenetrable gloom like a mantlesettling down upon us. The battle of Pittsburg Land-ing was fought with great loss of life to the Union. Then there was a call for three hundred thousand men,and soon another call for that many more, as if the Gov-ernment had decided to arise in her mighty strength andpower and crush the Rebellion at once. Enlistments had been going on steadily and theyoung and middle-aged had been perceptibly thinnedout from among us. Up to this time I had not thought itnecessary that I should go. I had had a feeling that thosewho were enlisting were doing it because they delightedin the public martial displayreminiscencesoft01jone
