One of the chiefest pleasures in receivingan invitation to the Story home was the opportu-nity it afforded of drinking in this atmosphere ofbeauty and artistic taste. Mr. Story had one of the larg-est rooms madeinto a theater, fitted up with a stage, drop curtain,footlights, and scenery. We are told that Mrs,Story made an excellent stage manager, director,and prompter; that Mr. Story was an actor ofmerit beyond the amateur. English, Italian, andFrench were the languages of the performanceswhich took place in this little theater. Heremany musical compositions were first heard bythe public, and many little theatrical piecesfirst submitted to its approval. Among thelatter was a play of Sir Edmund Mallets, TheOrdeal, performed when the ambassador wasan attache to the British embassy, and in whichthe author himself took a part.
