English: In Burke Canyon, Idaho. Looking up at the remnant of the Hecla Mine, red brick buildings with cement buildings in the distance. These buildings are a reminder of the early days of mining in Northern Idaho. Gold, silver ore and gems are still being mined in Idaho today though these mines have long been closed. Not since 1991 have these mines been running but the area is still under security.
Burke Canyon is famous for it's violent war involving the miners and company guard dispute in 1892 over pay and other issues. The Canyon is only 300 feet wide so very tight quarters for the community. In 1891, silver/lead ore valued at nine million dollars had been shipped out of the Coeur d'Alene mining district, including a quarter-million dollars' worth of gold bullion. |
