Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Remains of timber pond. The lines of posts visible here at 1777951 formed the shoreward side of a timber pond; logs that were to be used in shipbuilding were seasoned and preserved in seawater by being stored here until needed. This timber pond is not shown on the 1864 OS map, but the equivalent 1899 map shows it.

See the last-cited link for a discussion of the background details of this photo. The Erskine Bridge is also just visible, far upriver.

More extensive examples of timber ponds can be found on the other shore of the River Clyde; see, for example, 842027, which is just one of many images of the Port Glasgow timber ponds; they stretch for a distance of 2½ miles along the shore. For more images, see, for example, 11639835 [Those timber ponds are discussed in section 47 of the book "Archaeology Around Glasgow" by Susan Hothersall; see http://www.glasarchsoc.org.uk/page.php?13 for other references.]
