Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Remains of lime-kiln. This is the third of ten former lime-kiln sites that are located along a short section of the Murroch Burn. For an index to pictures of all ten sites, see 1622071

The remains of this lime-kiln are visible as a circular pit, about 3 metres across, in the foreground of the photo (its shape is more clearly evident from another viewpoint: 1732491); it stands on a mound, only a few metres from the Murroch Burn (which is visible at the far left of the image). A few stones, remnants of the original wall of the cairn, are exposed at the far side of the pit. Visible behind the pit is a smaller burn, flowing into the Murroch Burn.

The second of the ten former lime-kiln sites is also in this area, according to OS maps from 1864. I located what I believe to be its remains, but they are rather indistinct: note, directly behind the foreground pit and the small burn, another prominent mound that is standing alongside the Murroch Burn; although it can't be seen well in this photo, there is, on the left-hand side of that mound, an indistinct and rather irregular pit (at approximately NS 41129 77914), crossed by a modern fence.

The disruption caused when that fence was put up is the most likely reason for the poor state of that ruin. In addition, a buried high-pressure oil or gas pipeline runs downhill just a few metres to the west of the mound, and the slope has been cleared along its course; however, the pit seems to lie just outside the range of that latter disruption.
