Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Remains of cairn. See the link in the end-note for a summary of this site. The photograph shows a stone slab; this photograph is a view along the length of the slab, with Ben Lomond (NN3602) shown directly behind it on the skyline to provide a directional reference. For a closer look at the slab itself, see 1725321; for another view of the stone in context, see 1725343.

As mentioned in 1714306, a Wester Cameron farm is still in use nearby, and the ruins of Mid Cameron can be seen not far away. Logically, there would also have been an Easter Cameron farm; but, even as early as the time of the first-edition OS map (surveyed in 1860), no such farm is shown (either intact or as a ruin).

However, the "Third Statistical Account", in its discussion of "The County of Stirling" (1966), gives some clues about its position; quoting an older work, it mentions "the ruined cairn, with its coffins or 'kistvaens', at Easter Cameron".

That ruined cairn is unlikely to be either 880019, which is in the wrong direction, or 1725415, which is a little too far to the south. Instead, it is likely to refer to the cairn shown in this photograph, which had already been cleared away by 1830. See also http://canmore.rcahms.gov.uk/en/site/43448/details/cameron+muir/ (at Canmore), a report about the foundations of a cottage in the same general area, which might possibly be related to Easter Cameron.
