English: Remains of a drove road Running from the lower edge of the photo towards its centre are the faint remains of a drove road; this road led towards the site of the Carman Hill Cattle Fair, which faded away in the last decade of the nineteenth century; see https://www.geograph.org.uk/snippet/262
At one time, drove roads led to that site from the north, south, east, and west. The one shown here led from the north. Its remains are slight, but they could be located by means of a photograph reproduced on page 26 of John Mitchell's booklet "The Shielings and Drove Ways of Loch Lomondside" (2000). [This faint drove road should not be confused with a much more obvious nearby footpath, which is simply the continuation across the moor of a track that leads from the main road to the waterworks, as indicated on the map.] Remains of the roads leading to the cattle fair from the west and the east are rather more clearly visible; see, respectively, https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1051438 and https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/914922 |
