Summary
[edit]DescriptionRemains of a Roman causeway - geograph.org.uk - 1805745.jpg |
English: Remains of a Roman causeway The photograph was taken from beside a field gate on the southern side of a railway bridge. In the grassy area just to the east is a low mound which crosses the image from left to right (it is located just behind the foreground tuft of tall grass that is prominent in the right-hand half of the image).
This mound is apparently part of the faint traces of a causeway (from the Roman period) across the River Clyde: see the latter part of http://www.wosas.net/wosas_site.php?id=7925 (at WoSAS); the section between 1805787 and Dumbarton Road is the one shown here. [An aside: some readers might wonder, as I did, at the very precise dimensions (10.97m and 10.36m) that are given in that report for a very indistinct mound. In fact, no such precision is possible: quick calculations confirmed my suspicion that these figures, which come from the journal articles cited by WoSAS, represent original measurements in feet (36 ft and 34 ft, respectively); after conversion to metric units, too many figures have been retained.] On why the River Clyde, which is now navigable to Glasgow by shipping, could formerly be crossed on foot, see 1940839. For the line of the causeway on the southern shore of the Clyde, see 1941900. The course of the railway line can be seen on the left, and the background of the photo shows Sheep Hill, which is the site of a quarry and of a vitrified Iron Age fort (NS4374). |
