Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Remains of RAF Chipping Ongar This is the remains of dispersal on RAF Chipping Ongar. The airfield was known locally as Willingale airfield as this is the closest village. The field became operational with B26 aircraft, in July of 1943 a year later the units moved to France. RAF Dakotas flew from here to drop paratroops during the crossing of the Rhine in 1945 www.army.mod.uk/para/history/rhine.htm . The RAF remained until 1948 but the field was not released back to agriculture until 1959. In the 1970’s it was proposed that Willingdale would become the 3rd London airport however that honour fell to Stansted. For more info on the airfield see http://merlinsroared.tripod.com/id18.html you can see another picture at 260910. Much information as gleaned from Graham Smith’s book “Essex Airfields In The Second World War”. http://www.countrysidebooks.co.uk/book-catalogue-category.php?category=44
