English: Remains of Old Wharf, and mound with posts. For the main discussion of the wharf, which is now represented only by some lines of posts on the shore, see 1496335 (where the background details are also described).
The sandy area to the right of the far end of the wharf was, in the latter half of the nineteenth century, occupied by a bowling green (I wondered what the local bowling club was called, but have not been able to find out; it had gone by the time of the 1899 OS map, but is shown on the 1864 map). On a large mound at the near end of the ruins of the wharf, a pair of posts can be seen; the posts are about six metres tall, and perhaps (I am speculating) supported a sign associated with the wharf. The mound is similar (except in size) to one that is located about 550 metres further upriver: 1493444. |
