| Description |
English: Remains of Old Byland Water Race. Old Byland like many villages in the limestone country of the Tabular Hills because of their elevated position did not have a natural water supply. Water just filtered through the limestone. In the case of Old Byland there were springs 3km away and 50m higher up at the head of Caydale. The race was constructed to channel the water down to the village carefully following the contours. This is probably the work of Joseph Foord who carried out many similar works in the late 18c. |
