[edit]DescriptionRemains of Hadrian's Pantheon in Athens on June 24, 2020.jpg |
English: "The visible ancient remains in this plot belong to a monumental Hadrianic building (117 - 138 A.D.). The building was a large three-aisled basilica of an estimated length 85m. and width 40m., with a porch at the east end. It was sited about fifty metres east of the Library of Hadrian and the Roman Agora, constructed over the remains of late-Hellenistic and early Roman buildings, on the southern side of the ancient street.
In this particular plot, part of the northern wall of the building (total length 11.50m and width 1. 70m.) is preserved, in the height of four rows of blocks made of aktite, a local limestone of Piraeus. Seven metres away to the south, a row of internal cruciform piers possibly supported arcades or vaults. Soon after the building was found, in 1968, it was identified as the Common Shrine of All Gods, the Pantheon, referred to by Pausanias among the buildings constructed by Emperor Hadrian in Athens. It is also believed to be the Panellenion, a meeting place of the deputies of city-states, work of the same Roman emperor as well. During the 3rd cent. A.D. the northern side of the monument became part of the Late Roman Fortification Wall. A fortifying tower and an elaborated marble gate were added to that wall at the era of the Byzantine emperor Justinianus I (527-565 A.D.). Part of this tower is preserved in 5m. height in the western wall of the private building on the east. The aforementioned fortified gate is situated in this neighbouring plot, while at the southern end of the same property, remains of the post-byzantine church of Panagia Krystalliotissa (17th. cent.) are also preserved in the basement of the last century building."
